UNION STATION BREWERY

Union Station Brewery in Providence, Rhode Island - Best Breweries

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND

Initially visited harbor-bound state capitol October ’05, finding contrasting upscale brewpub and blue collar watering hole within walking distance. Opened in ’93, below-street level pub, UNION STATION BREWERY, situated in the foreground of ritzy Marriott Hotel, was converted from an old train station cellar.

A subsidy of John Harvard’s Brewhouse, its large courtyard deck fronts the side door entrance. The homey brick walled interior features prominent bar with glass-encased copper kettle brew tanks, green leather-seated wood chairs, …

THE CHURCH BREW WORKS

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA

Industrial ‘Steel City’ is largest inland port, connecting Allegheny and Monongahela waterways with the Ohio River. Initially visited red brick macrobrew mainstay Pittsburgh Brewing Company (Iron City Beer/ I.C. Light) and vital microbrewery Pennsylvania Brewery, December ’03.

Adjacent to Pittsburgh Brewing in the Lawrenceville section was most intriguing THE CHURCH BREW WORKS. Converted from St. John’s Church to a detailed brewpub, The Church had unique altar vats, stain glass windows, Douglas fir floors, an outdoor rectory patio, and …

ROGUE ALE PUB HOUSE

NEWPORT, OREGON

Native Oregonians take beer drinking very seriously. Charming resort town, Newport, along the Pacific Ocean and Yaquina Bay sixty miles west of Corvallis, boasts premier ROGUE ALE PUB HOUSE and Rogue Brewery on opposing sides of Yaquina Bridge. I had consumed at least a dozen different Rogue brews in Jersey before making Oregon-Washington trip, March ’03.

I owe Rogue a big shout out not only because I’ve always admired brewer John Maier’s beer judgement, but because these friendly-as-hell …

Across from picturesque Mohawk Lake in rural western Jersey, Sparta-based KROGH’S RESTAURANT (now a National Historic Landmark), is tucked into a Swiss chalet-styled building with low ceilings, wood-lacquered walls, and rear brew tanks. Serving homemade cuisine since 1937, this cozy tavern began brewing operations in 1999. Originally visited December ’06, Krogh’s left dining area and right side bar featured olden wood furnishings perfectly indicative of its idyllic western Jersey surroundings.

Seafood, burgers, chicken, ribs, and Cajun …

HEARTLAND BREWERY

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK

Though most of the beers at the five Manhattan-based HEARTLAND brewpubs get brewed in a separate Brooklyn facility, each pub has its own definitive specificity and atmosphere. I have frequented these variegated local watering holes on many occasions, usually on the way to softball games in Central Park with High Times.

In June ’06, made trek to South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan to quaff a few seasonal brews at HEARTLAND (opened around 2003). Located in a …

MILLY’S TAVERN

MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Featuring a full spectrum of ‘hop-noxious’ brews in Manchester’s modern commercial-university district, cavernous lower level pub, MILLY’S TAVERN, resides in a bridge-shaded tall red brick building, visited New Year’s eve ‘05. Located along the riverside, the former Stark Mill Brewery (re-christened Milly’s Tavern in 2002) is a mere fifteen minute drive from Nashua’s friendly brewpub competitor, Martha’s Exchange. Exposed ducts, right and rear dining, and local nighttime entertainment mark this ample half-basement lair.

Brew tanks located behind …

GREAT DANE – FITCHBURG

Both Madison and neighboring Fitchburg boast GREAT DANE brewpubs, servicing the nations’ #1 party school, University of Wisconsin. In June ’03, I quaffed dry mocha John Stoner’s Oatmeal Stout; mocha-espresso Black Earth Porter; spruce-y citrus Sugar River ESB; berry-spiced Old Glory American Pale Ale; fruit-candied Potters Run IPA; and off-dry lemon-wedged grapefruit-tart Crop Circle Wheat at Fitchburg site.

Right inside the Olympic Village of Lake Placid, within walking distance of the hockey arena where USA beat Soviet Union in glorious fashion during 1980 Olympics, lies one of Upper New York’s best brewpubs.

Main Street’s maroon-hued lodge-styled GREAT ADIRONDACK STEAK & SEAFOOD, operating since ’97, opens from side door to cozy wood bar sidled by front-windowed dining area with brew tanks concealed in back section. During amiable Sunday lunchtime visitation with family before snowy ride …

MARKET CROSS PUB & INN

CARLISLE, PENNSYLVANIA

Before reaching Gettysburg during terse April ’06 family trip, spent warm spring afternoon in Carlisle, thirty miles north, stopping by midtown staple, MARKET CROSS PUB & INN (established April Fools Day, 1994).

Located ground level inside an adorable red brick building housing second and third floor garden apartments, its quaintly provincial English-styled bar is front-center with TV’s on each side and dining sections to the right and left rear. Keg handles bedeck the walls alongside cool artifacts. A …

Best Washington DC Brewpub | Capitol City Brewing Company | Capitol City Brews

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA / SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA

In town for surprise birthday party to celebrate my Uncle Ed’s 60th birthday May ‘02, found godsend Total Wine & More in Springfield. The only D.C. bottled beer I scored was Olde …

CAMBRIDGE BREWING

The Brew Lounge: Cambridge Brewing Company in Cambridge, MA [Part 1]
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

During April ’05 Boston trip, initially visited CAMBRIDGE BREWING at Kendall Square (a retail/ entertainment center taking up a few centralized city blocks). One of the first brewery-restaurants in the United States, this popular establishment opened in 1989. Alongside contending watering holes Flattop Johnny’s, Jasmine & Kendall Lounge, and Tommy Doyle’s Irish Pub, its blue-green entrance leads to brick-walled, high ceiling bar with brew tanks to the rear.
