GOOSE ISLAND BIG JOHN IMPERIAL STOUT

Savory booze-draped mocha mellowing overlays soft-toned Imperial Stout. Soothing dark-roasted brown chocolate fudging brings lactic-sugared cocoa nibs, maple sap, molasses, toffee and burnt caramel to the mocha-smoked foreground above an extremely mild dry hop char. Luxurious vanilla-beaned bourbon tones spread across tertiary plum, fig and blackberry souring. Latent black licorice flourish picks up wispy chocolate cake, Baker’s chocolate, cappuccino and marshmallow undertones by the delicately creamed chocolate liqueur finish.

ROGUE JOHN JOHN HAZELNUT BROWN NECTAR (RUM BARREL)

Stylistically thin barrel-aged rum spicing and iffy hop-toasted hazelnut flavoring downsize perfectly fine Hazelnut Brown Nectar Ale. Nevertheless, this ‘nutty twist to a European Brown Ale’ succeeds as a soft-toned crossover for lighter tastes dipping their toes into bigger beers (much like Innis & Gunn’s oak-aged subtleties). Hazelnut coffee glint reaches caramel nougat center as brown chocolate, toffee, vanilla and butterscotch illusions reach fruition above fig-soured raisin-prune conflux and caraway-seeded pecan-praline-chestnut nuances. Clean mineral watering abates wispy rum influence.

DOGFISH HEAD ROBERT JOHNSON HELLHOUND ON MY ALE

Approachable 2011 hop-head delight pays tribute to Mississippi Delta blues progenitor 100 years after his birth. Well-balanced copper-hazed Imperial IPA contrasts resinous hop-oiled dryness and piney juniper bittering against floral yellow-orange fruiting. Shandy-like peach, apricot, pineapple and melon sweetness saddles lemon-peeled orange-tangerine-grapefruit tartness to citron vodka finish. Biting 10% alcohol warmth soothes. Will satisfy wide ranging beer enthusiasts.

ROGUE JOHN JOHN DEAD GUY ALE (WHISKEY BARREL)

Boundless whiskey-barreled helles bock takes popular Dead Guy Ale on an intricate journey. Rum-soaked alcohol burn spreads across lingering butterscotch, marzipan, and almondine sweetness, cinnamon-toasted nutmeg spicing, and floral-hopped juniper bittering. Whiskey-smoked Jim Beam/ Jack Daniels illusions amplify caramel-chocolate malting to oaken vanilla finish. Tertiary walnut-hazelnut snip receives latent cocoa powdering. Just a tad less creamy than expected.

JOHN HARVARD’S BREWHOUSE – MANCHESTER

MANCHESTER, CONNECTICUT

Opened 1997, Manchester’s JOHN HARVARD’S BREWHOUSE may’ve been the best franchise brewpub in the Northeast chain. But it closed in the summer of 2011 and was replaced by Tullycross Tavern & Microbrewery in November.

Visited May ’10, this freestanding mustard-hued maroon-trimmed pub was located across Manchester’s Plaza at Buckland Hills. Typical pub fare such as appetizers-pizza-burgers and expanded Americana dinner menu went fine with brewer Frank Fermino’s well-crafted stylistic libations emanating from rear glass-encased brew tanks. Rectangular center …

JOHN HARVARD’S – CAMBRIDGE

John Harvard's Brewhouse – Cambridge, Massachusetts | Fifty States of Brew
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS

Along the Charles River across from Boston, historic puritanical colony, Cambridge, could be difficult to navigate with its narrow one-way cobblestone streets, landmark cultural museums, and world-class collegiate institutions. Busy downstairs restaurant JOHN HARVARD’S BREWHOUSE, with its wooden décor, Old Americana portraits, and reasonably priced entrees, has been a provincial staple of this frontier settlement for over a decade as of April ’05 visit. But closed down in 2019.

Boasting beer recipes handed down from literary wit William …

JOHN HARVARD’S – FRAMINGHAM

BOSTON VICINITY, MASSACHUSETTS

Within short proximity of Boston, at Shoppers World Mall in Framingham, lies arguably the best of many JOHN HARVARD’S brewpubs, visited April ‘05. A new red brick building in a commercial business area offering spacious front patio, wood-carved seating area, copper-kettle and stainless steel brew tanks encased behind bar (with dual tv’s), its stained-glass godly-posed Jerry Garcia, JFK, and Teddy Roosevelt murals truly define independence.

Brewmeister Brian Sanford’s nicely diversified fare included lemony wheat-dried prickly-hopped hay-straw-parched Helles

JOHNNY DOWD @ KNITTING FACTORY

Johnny Dowd / Knitting Factory / November 17, 1999

A weathered musical chameleon with a deep southern drawl and charmingly self-effacing wit, gray-haired troubadour, Johnny Dowd, captivated a polite Knitting Factory audience this cold November night. His dark, brooding dirges feel like black storm clouds stretched across barren plains while his cracked swamp Blues recall avant-garde enigma, Captain Beefheart.

He may forever linger in obscurity, but Dowd’s a true talent with great musical sense. His version of Hank Williams’ “A …
