Updated ’13 version of BBC Altbier thins out from syrupy honey pour to nutty caramelized Vienna-like malting before glutinous wheat flouring subsides and hasty malt liquor snip becomes metallic by murky sweet grained finish.

3 SHEEPS REBEL KENT THE FIRST AMBER ALE
Nearly everything a moderate-bodied amber ale should be. Spicy red-orange fruiting and sharp hop bittering override caramel-toasted cereal graining. Fluttered red apple, brown pear, green grape and white peach illusions pick up slick diacetyl astringency that ruins initial promise.
(NO LABEL) RIDGEBACK ALE
Ace amber ale allows delicate mocha nuttiness and pleasant hop roasting to nullify any mild fruit ambiance. Earthen musk dirties up dry cocoa-powdered chocolate seed moderation, wavered peanut-hazelnut conflux and minor cardboard edging. Sharp carbolic fizz tickles the tongue. No ordinary lightweight.
ROGUE AMERICAN AMBER ALE (2014)
Updated recipe for lesser canned version lacks fruited nuttiness and sufficient dark-grained malting of original. Instead, tawny chestnut-hued moderation settles for blander dewy earthiness and murkier honey-roasted sweetness. Cat pee hints abound.
SINGLECUT DEAN PACIFIC NW MAHOGANY AMBER
On tap at Blue Ribbon Tavern, English bitter-like amber ale tosses black tea, grainy peat and walnut shells at toasted white breaded spine. Dried fig, date and apricot inundate earthen hop midst. Dry finish is indecisive.
DARK HORSE AMBER ALE
Indifferent rust-hazed ‘classic ale’ blends Belgian blonde-styled dried fruiting with pungent ESB-like dewy peat earthiness. Toasted barleymalts secure raw-honeyed rye and pumpernickel breading to the biscuit-y bottom. Murky plantain, date, fig, blood orange and tangelo illusions fail to fully integrate.
UPSTATE COMMON SENSE KENTUCKY-STYLED COMMON ALE
SLOOP THE RED C
‘Bold, aggressive’ amber ale sports brisk India Pale Ale-like piney fruiting. Yellow grapefruit tang and orange-peeled lemon rind bittering settle alongside dry wood sharpness. Resinous hop minerality seeps into ancillary pineapple, mango, peach, red apple and pear illusions. Juicy citric appeal hides earthen vegetal notch.
LIBERTY STREET RED GLARE AMBER ALE
Mediocre blue-collar fodder with heightened toasted hop astringency and murky citric souring fails to ignite. Rotted grapefruit-orange-tangerine tartness gets washed-out at sourdough bottom. Metallic tinge lowers impact further.
TOP SHELF IRISH-STYLE ALE
Phenol cider-like astringency messes up dry peat-grained malting and mild cocoa-molasses conflux. Pungent yeast profile too close to brewers’ tepid Belgian Ale.
WEED AMBER ALE
Ordinary sessionable moderation dedicated to California senator Abner Weed (and snickeringly promoted as ‘legal weed’) maintains mild caramel-toasted malting above grassy Cascade-hopped astringency, distant sugar-spiced apple-pear fruiting and celery-like neutrality. Further below, tiny metallic shards seep into murkily earthen rusticity.
ROSCOE’S HOP HOUSE AMBER ALE
Unspecific light-bodied fluff meshes soft caramel malt creaming with mild phenol hop spicing. Dull yellow-orange fruiting ransacks buttery wheat cracker spine.
