MAUI ALOHA BAKTUN BELGIAN STOUT
On tap at Max’s, Hawaiian-brewed Belgian Stout gets a tad musty despite assured dark-roasted chocolate opening and bittersweet coffee bean salience. Sugary Belgian yeast soaks up powdered cocoa dusting and mild espresso dalliance. Soapy vanilla-creamed hazelnut, coconut, macadamia and cola illusions never reach fruition. Mild chipotle-peppered cinnamon spicing barely registers and the mocha finish becomes watered down.

Dirty earthen soiling and deep-roasted hop bittering secure rich bottom. On tap at Ambulance Brewhouse, complexities abounded. Belgian yeast-inspired chocolate spicing receives deeper dried fruiting as bruised blackberry, brambleberry and blueberry sugaring contrasts dry port-burgundy wining. Anise, chocolate cake and chocolate-covered cherry illusions seep thru.
SAMUEL ADAMS THIRTEENTH HOUR DARK BELGIAN STOUT
Vigorous ‘Kosmic Mother Funk’ aged in oak barrels overlays sour Belgian yeast funk with dark-fruited rum, bourbon, burgundy, and Courvoisier toxicity as aromatic black pepper fills the air. Chocolate-spiced raisin, plum, fig and dried cherry illusions form at the vanilla-daubed molasses midst while back-tongued cardamom-nutmeg-ginger seasoning reaches a light-roast brown coffee simmer. Advertised ‘oaken’ aspect gets downplayed.

Decisive dark browned full body raises peat-smoked mocha malting and cappuccino coffee creaming above viscous anise motif. Midriff black currant bittering sidles massive mocha indulgence.
