EVIL TWIN JUSTIN BLABAER

Redonkulous ultra-dry Berliner weiss grabs immediate attention flogging purple-labeled Teen Beat mag design while devising tartly acidic blueberry scour. Hooking up with gypsy Dane beer designer, Evil Twin, South Carolina’s finest brewery, Westbrook, bottles and kegs this mightily lactic magenta-pinked sour ale. Puckering lemon-juiced blueberry vinaigrette souring receives vinous green grape, oaken cherry and green apple pungency over crisp-watered minerality. Syrupy woodruff illusions waver beneath bubbly champagne sparkle. Here’s another interesting lactobacillus-injected competitor.

(NEW BELGIUM) YUZU IMPERIAL BERLINERWEISS

On tap at Orlando’s House Of Beer, exotic light body never lives up to zesty citric-soured expectations. Delicate mandarin ‘yuzu’ fruiting fails at providing sufficient lemony grapefruit-like tartness for highly acidic lactobacillus influence of German-styled Berliner weiss. Stylistic salty coriander adjunct fades to oblivion against pale wheat malt setting, overtaken by lightly sulfuric brettanomyces souring.

THE BRUERY HOTTENROTH BERLINER WEISS

THE BRUERY HOTTENROTHProfusely mouth-puckered beige-hazed yellow-glazed ‘tart wheat ale’ creates vinous Sauvignon Blanc or Belgian Gueuze feel (when not sweetened by raspberry and woodruff syrup). Sour green grape, Granny Smith apple, and unripe lemon fruiting reinforces wild yeast herbage and leathery barnyard funk. Grassy-bottomed horsehide, hay, and maize illusions breach tertiary tannic cherry tartness at tail end of light-bodied carbolic spritzer. Despite heightened brettanomyces level, acidic tendencies are kept in check.
