WHITBREAD TRADITIONAL PALE ALE

Established in 1742, Samuel Whitbread’s captivating bitter features malted barley sweetness, moderate hop bittering, and sharp grained backbone.  Not far removed from a light brown ale, this ‘traditional pale ale’ now gets bottled by Boston Beer Company in Cincinnati for American consumption. Expert guzzlers may notice loss of character or lower flavor profile if familiar with original version. Sourdough informs dry Scotch-malted cocoa-fig-pecan cluster and minor grape tease, but phenol hops coarsen dirty-watered astringency, abating further investigation. Better to imbibe Bass Pale Ale instead.

CASTA BRUNA

Dark ruby hue counters light-bodied appeal and soft carbolic fizz of middling pale ale. Pallid barley-roasted mocha entry enhanced by caramel-candied cherry souring, mild chestnut ridge, and resin-hopped herbal twinge. Too meek to compete with better stylistic competitors. Simplicity is its saving grace.

ALLAGASH SPECIALE RESERVE ALE

Copper-toned foamy-headed Belgian knockoff with splendid wheat-backed wine-like white ale essence and loud minty herbaceous clove spicing firmly backed by sour yeast sinew. Very relaxing, but a tad predictable and less complex than the real deal. Softhearted American pilsner fans will enjoy, but others may be put-off by inconsequential fruited lightness.

BREWERY HILL PALE ALE

Brewery Hill makes consistent easy-to-drink brews. And this sweet-scented, deep amber-toned “kettle-hopped” pale ale’s no exception. Wispy caramel-chocolate sash leads to lusty barleywine palate. Fizzy orange blossom midst picks up speckled nutmeg-cinnamon spicing. Durable sour yeast sinew emerges, lining the tongue with latent honeyed butterscotch illusions.

CASCO BAY PALE ALE

Subdued coppery American-style pale ale not only compares favorably to superb Sierra Nevada rival, but also brings brusque spiced-hop tingle and malt-y red-fruited India Pale Ale traits to pronounced sugared grapefruit tang. Slim mocha-nut residue and scanty caramel malt backbone counter recessive orange rind bittering.
