Rich amber-hazed wheat perfectly befits sunny summertime sipping. Creamy honeyed yeast sinew lathers lemony banana-orange fruiting and downplayed clove-coriander spicing. Mild hop bittering and spritzy lemon zest contrast luscious butterscotch ascent. Despite unfiltered American styling, closer to full-bodied German-styled wiessbier.

GOOSE ISLAND 312 URBAN WHEAT ALE
Soft yellow-fruited Cascade-hopped light-bodied American wheat ale makes for refreshingly clean lawnmower fare. Lemony lime zest goes under the radar, herbal whim is nebulous and delicate white-breaded spine falters on first tasting. Yellow grape, green apple, and white peach illusions are barely audible. On ’13 re-tasting: Summery lemon zest briskness lingered better over sweeter glass-sugared honeyed wheat spine. On tap at Tommy Fox’s, lemony orange peel tartness picked up herbal perfumed whim.
HARPOON GINGER WHEAT
Part of brewers’ ongoing ‘100 barrel series,’ smooth gin-soaked herbal medication upends cloying lemon-sugared heather-tipped orange tang with zippy ginger ale fizzing. But its cross to bear is the glutinous sorghum-like souring depleting honeyed ginger-spearmint-eucalyptus subsidy and citric-bruised continuance.
21ST AMENDMENT HELL OR HIGH WATERMELON WHEAT BEER
Mild golden-bodied wheat ale lacks fruity luster in canned version. Washed-out hard-candied Jolly Rancher watermelon tartness lingers softly through blanched rye wheat backbone. Subsidiary mandarin orange, peach, and cantaloupe illusions fade fast as abysmal pale-malted white-breaded sorghum slouching reaches soapy melon-limed finish. Watermelon juicing clearly needs deeper resonance and latent cloy nature proves troublesome.
KONA WAILUA WHEAT ALE
Washed-out light-bodied limited edition ’09 release splashes passion fruit tedium across sour lemon-lime indifference. Tart kiwi-mango-plantain tropicalia disrupted by astringent citric-hopped doldrums to unstable white-breaded rye-dried cracked wheat spine. Indistinct 2011 version found phenolic tinning undermining washed-out passion-fruited white peach, green grape, pineapple and kumquat slip as well as herbal lemon-rotted orange souring. Carbolic Seltzer-like dishwater made worse.
FLYING FISH EXIT 11 HOPPY AMERICAN WHEAT ALE
Well-balanced bottle conditioned straw-hazed ‘pale wheat’ ale (celebrating Jersey Turnpike exit) juxtaposes piney floral-hopped lemon-orange zest and mild grapefruit-currant bittering against tangy apricot-apple-tangerine sweetness. Candi-sugared Belgian yeast softens alcohol burn at fruity sherbet finish. White peach, purple grape, and parfait illusions come and go.
THE BRUERY BLACK ORCHARD BLACK WHEAT ALE
(PHILADELPHIA) FLEUR DE LEHIGH GOLDEN WHEAT
Perfumed floral-herbal highlights enliven sunny Seltzer-fizzed lemon glaze, tart blueberry midst, and orange marmalade reminder. White-peppered jasmine-lavender floridity bolsters ancillary eucalyptus, cardamom, and ginger herbage. Evergreen-fresh mint julep and mojito illusions provide further peculiarity.
(HARPOON) CATAMOUNT MAPLE WHEAT (2009)
BELL’S OBERON ALE
Briskly citric-spiced, highly-hopped medium body retains lively lemony orange zesting, spritzy mandarin orange Seltzer spray, tart white peach snip and illusive dark fruitiness over mild roasted grain base. Corn-sugared caramel malting contrasts herbal florality beneath the mildly creamed oated wheat surface.
